Summit School received its name from Summit Street, which is now 10th Street in Canton. The building was opened in 1908 and consisted of eight rooms. A six-room addition was built in 1926, and in 1952-53 a gymnasium and kindergarten were added.

As part of the Design for the Future building program construction began in Summer 2004, with completion in September 2005.
